About Mathare in Focus

The Mathare in Focus project is an opportunity for CMETrust scholars to build new skills during their school breaks and raise funds for more scholarships. Each April, CMETrust scholars participate in a one-day photography workshop with a local Kenyan photographer. The scholars are then given disposable cameras and encouraged to take pictures of life in Mathare as they see it. Their pictures capture hope, despair and inspiration of the Mathare Slum, through their own eyes.

The project results in a calendar and photography exhibit. Framed prints and calendars were sold at the Mathare in Focus Calendar Launch & Photography Exhibit in Ottawa, at Arts Court in 2009 and at the Cube Gallery in 2010. The event at Orange Art Gallery on November 19, 2011 is the third "unveiling" of this project.
